Numerology Glossary: 43 Core Terms Explained

This glossary defines 43 numerology terms the way Soul Aura's calculators and report engine use them, in alphabetical order, with a link to the guide that explains each one in full where one exists. Numerology has no governing body, so terms and rules vary by author; where Soul Aura's rule is a choice, the entry says so.

What this page is: a plain-English reference for the vocabulary of Pythagorean numerology, written from the rules of the engine behind the free calculators and Soul Aura reports. What it is not: a claim that numerology is validated, a forecast or professional advice. Soul Aura uses numerology as a structured tool for self-reflection, not fortune-telling, and it is not scientifically validated.

Terms A to Z

AI mentor file

A text file delivered with a Soul Aura numerology report that you load into an AI assistant such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, so you can keep asking questions about your own chart. An assistant can miscalculate, so treat its answers as prompts for reflection.

All-digits rule

Soul Aura's second check on a Life Path. The engine adds all eight digits of the date written as DDMMYYYY, and if that sum reduces to 11, 22 or 33 while the day, month and year route ended on a single digit, the Master Number is kept.

Angel numbers

Repeating sequences such as 111 or 444 that many people notice in daily life and read as messages. They are not calculated from a name or birth date, so they sit outside the numbers defined in this glossary.

Archetype

A short title attached to a number, such as the Leader for Life Path 1 or the Seeker for Life Path 7. Soul Aura uses archetype names as shorthand for a number's traditional themes, not as personality types.

Balance number

A single digit from 1 to 9 made by adding the values of the first letter of each part of the birth name and reducing without keeping Master Numbers.

Birth name

The full name on a birth certificate. It is the base for the Expression, Soul Urge and Personality numbers in Soul Aura's calculators and reports.

Birthday number

The day of the month you were born, with its reduced form: the 29th is 29 reduced to 11, and the 14th is 14 reduced to 5. It is one ingredient of the Life Path and is read as a specific knack rather than a life theme.

Chaldean system

A letter chart that uses only the values 1 to 8, assigns them by sound rather than alphabetical order and leaves 9 without a letter. Soul Aura does not use it for its numbers.

Challenge numbers

Four numbers from the differences between the reduced birth month, day and year: month and day, day and year, those two results, and month and year, always taken as positive. Traditional readers often pair them with the four pinnacle periods.

Compatibility

A comparison of two people's core numbers, most often their Life Path numbers. Soul Aura's relationship report reads two charts side by side and gives no compatibility score.

Compound number

A total of two or more digits before it is reduced, such as 16 or 29. The engine keeps this raw total so it can check for the karmic-debt totals 13, 14, 16 and 19 and show the route to the final digit.

Consonants

Every letter except the vowels, including W and any Y that the Y rule leaves as a consonant. Their values add up to the Personality number.

Cornerstone, capstone and first vowel

Three markers taken from the first name: its first letter (cornerstone), its last letter (capstone) and its first vowel. Traditional readers say they hint at how a person approaches new things, how they finish them and how they respond from within.

Current name

The name a person uses now when it differs from the birth name, such as a married or chosen name. Soul Aura's report can read it as a second layer beside the birth name; the core numbers always come from the birth name.

Destiny number

Another name for the Expression number, used by some authors and calculators.

Essence number

A number for one year built from two transit letters, one moving through the first name and one through the last, each letter lasting as many years as its value. The engine adds the two letters' values and reduces the total.

Expression number

The number from every letter of the full birth name, added once as a whole and reduced, keeping 11, 22 and 33. Adding word by word can give a different result; Soul Aura uses the whole-name total.

Heart's Desire number

Another name for the Soul Urge number.

Hidden passion

The number or numbers that occur most often among the letter values of the full birth name; if several tie for the highest count, all are listed. Traditional readers treat it as a quality a person relies on repeatedly.

Inclusion chart

A count of how many letters in the name carry each value from 1 to 9. The engine compares each count with the average and marks the value as missing, normal, high or excess.

Karmic debt number

A total of exactly 13, 14, 16 or 19 reached before reduction, written 13/4, 14/5, 16/7 or 19/1. The engine checks the Life Path total, the Expression, Soul Urge and Personality totals and the day of birth. Tradition frames each as a lesson to work on, not a penalty.

Karmic lessons

The numbers from 1 to 9 that do not appear among the letter values of the full birth name. They are a different idea from karmic debt numbers, which come from totals; traditional readers see missing numbers as areas to build deliberately.

Letter value

The number from 1 to 9 given to each letter in the Pythagorean chart: A to I are 1 to 9, J to R run 1 to 9 again, and S to Z are 1 to 8.

Life cycles

Three long periods of life, called Formative, Productive and Harvest in Soul Aura's engine. Their numbers come from the birth month, day and year; the first period ends at age 36 minus the single-digit Life Path number and the second lasts 27 years.

Life Path number

The main number of a chart, calculated from the full birth date. Soul Aura reduces the day, month and year separately and adds them, then applies the all-digits rule. Try the Life Path calculator.

Master Number

11, 22 and 33, kept as they are instead of being reduced to 2, 4 and 6. They are read as the intensity of the root number, not as a higher rank.

Maturity number

The Life Path number and the Expression number added together and reduced, keeping Master Numbers. The engine labels it as becoming active after about age 35 to 40, in line with common teaching.

North Node

A point in the Moon's orbit that astrology reads as a direction of growth, with the South Node as its opposite. Soul Aura derives it from the birth date using a built-in table of astronomical data and uses it as a symbol in its reports.

Numerology

A symbolic system that assigns meaning to numbers, usually by turning a name and a birth date into a small set of core numbers. It is not scientifically validated; Soul Aura uses it as a structured tool for self-reflection. See also whether numerology is real.

Personal Month and Personal Day

Shorter cycles inside a Personal Year. The engine adds the calendar month to the Personal Year and reduces to 1 to 9 for the Personal Month, then adds the digits of the calendar day to that for the Personal Day, a step that keeps an 11 if one appears.

Personal Year

A number from 1 to 9 for one calendar year, made from the birth day, the birth month and the year, each reduced, then added and reduced again without keeping Master Numbers. It is read as a theme within a nine-year cycle. Try the Personal Year calculator.

Personality number

The number from the consonants of the full birth name, added once and reduced, keeping 11, 22 and 33. Tradition reads it as the outer manner others meet first.

Pinnacles

Four long periods of life, each with its own number: the first from the birth month and day, the second from the day and year, the third from the first two, and the fourth from the month and year. In the engine the first period ends at age 36 minus the single-digit Life Path number, and the second and third last nine years each.

Planes of expression

A sorting of the name's letters into four planes: physical (D, E, M, N, V, W), mental (A, H, J, Q, S, Z), emotional (B, C, F, K, L, O, T, U, X) and intuitive (G, I, P, R, Y). The engine reports the share of letters on each plane.

Pythagorean system

The letter chart that gives A to I the values 1 to 9 in order and repeats the cycle. It is named after the Greek philosopher, but the chart in use today is modern. Soul Aura uses it for every letter-based number.

Rational thought number

A single digit from 1 to 9 made by adding the reduced total of the first name to the reduced birth day and reducing again without keeping Master Numbers.

Reduction

Adding the digits of a number repeatedly until one digit remains: 37 becomes 3 + 7 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1. Soul Aura's Life Path and name numbers stop early at 11, 22 and 33, while the Personal Year never does.

Root number

The single digit that a Master Number or compound number reduces to: 11 to 2, 22 to 4, 33 to 6, 16 to 7. Some readers use the root as a second lens when a Master Number does not fit.

Shadow pattern

The habitual downside of a number's strengths, such as a 1 deciding alone too quickly. Soul Aura describes shadow patterns as observations to notice, not as flaws or forecasts.

Soul Urge number

The number from the vowels of the full birth name, added once and reduced, keeping 11, 22 and 33. Tradition reads it as what a person wants underneath, in contrast with the Personality number.

Universal Year

The number of the calendar year itself, the same for everyone: 2026 adds up to 10 and reduces to 1, and 2027 adds up to 11, which the engine keeps as a Master Number with root 2. It supplies the year component of every Personal Year sum.

Vowels

A, E, I, O and U, plus Y in two cases: when the name has no other vowel, or when Y sits directly between two consonants. W is never a vowel. Their values add up to the Soul Urge number.

Y rule

The rule that decides which side of the name the letter Y adds to: a vowel if the name has no other vowel or the Y sits directly between two consonants, a consonant otherwise. Spaces are removed first, so the letters of a neighbouring word count.

Frequently asked questions

Why do two numerology sites give different numbers for the same name or date?

Conventions differ: whether 11, 22 and 33 are kept, whether a name is added whole or word by word, how Y is treated and which letter chart is used. Soul Aura states its rules on each calculator page so a result can be checked by hand.

Are these terms standard across all numerology?

No. There is no governing body, and authors use some terms differently. This glossary describes how Soul Aura's engine and site use each term.

Where can I calculate these numbers?

The free calculators page lists tools for the Life Path, name numbers and Personal Year, and each shows its steps.
